Biometric Access Control, A Good Choice for Homeowners?
Biometric access control is any locking system that uses a person's physical characteristics (i.e. fingerprint, eye scans, voice) to verify identity and allow access. Hand geometry is also increasingly being used. With hand geometry, a scanner recognizes the specific size and shape of the user's hand.
In the past high tech security like biometric access control has predominately been seen in government and corporate settings due to its cost. These days, however, costs are coming down and many homeowners are choosing to replace their standard key-driven door locks with biometric door locks.
Reasons for Switching to Biometric Access Control
There are a number of reasons people choose biometric locks over traditional key locks. One is simple convenience. If you have a tendency to lose or forget your keys, a lock that opens to your thumb print can be a blessing. Also, you don't need to worry about a burglar getting a hold of your keys and thus making your home vulnerable.
Most systems are battery powered, so they will work even if the power goes out. A low-battery indicator will come on when it's time to change the battery, thus giving you plenty of time to act, so you don't get locked out of your own house.
Prices for residential biometric door locks vary depending on manufacturer, but several retailers offer one door systems for under $400.
