Learning Gun Safety Can Save You

April 28, 2011 – 11:06 pm

760-1232909406uIfGWhether you choose to have a gun in your home is your prerogative. However, regardless of what you decide, it’s beneficial to know basic gun safety. Obviously, if you’re going to own a gun and have one in your home, you need to know how to use it properly and safely. But what if someone broke into your home and somehow you pulled the gun away from them…would you know how to use the gun if you had to defend yourself?

The first step you can take is to go to a local shooting range. Here you can learn the basics and inner workings of a gun. During this process, you can figure out how much you really know. Can you load one properly? Are you able to disarm it and arm it? Do you know whether it takes bullets or shells? Once you feel comfortable holding the gun, you can try shooting targets. This will give you a reality check…would you be able to use your gun effectively in order to save your life? Things happen so quickly, and it’s hard to tell whether adrenaline would help or hurt in the situation.

Knowing how to use a gun safely is great knowledge and experience, but you can also go one step further and take self-defense classes. Even if you decide to have a gun in your home, how will you defend yourself if the assailant gets it off of you? You should be able to stand your own ground, and it’s best to know how to get out of a choke hold or how to get a weapon off of somebody bigger than you just in case you ever find yourself in these situations.

Learning gun safety is one step, but you have to be responsible and also familiarize yourself with other methods of self-defense that don’t include gun shots.

Basic Babysitting Safety Tips

April 26, 2011 – 12:31 am

296-1268479415QlgjDuring the summer, you might find yourself having a home full of children. They all might not be your children, but you’re still responsible for what happens to them. Avoiding accidents and paying mind to basic safety tips can make summertime more enjoyable for everyone. When babysitting extra kids, keep these basic tips in mind to prevent chaos.

Locate First Aid Supplies

You should always know where you first aid kit is, and it should also always be stocked. In addition to having bandages, antibiotic cream and other essentials, it’s important that you know how to use the supplies. Purchase a basic home safety book is beneficial, because if you have a kid that has hit his/her head or one that has a severe cut, you will know how to properly deal with them.

Be Creative

Planning activities for the children can help prevent accidents, because you can suggest less dangerous activities. Plus, keeping them busy can prevent the children from playing with things that they shouldn’t touch. Here are some fun ideas: run in the sprinkler, color the driveway with chalk, finger paint, take a walk, play a sport (kickball, basketball, etc.).

Supervise at All Times

Kids are fast movers. They might be upstairs one minute and then the next they might decide to go outside. It helps if you remind the kids to tell you where they’re going next, but it’s easy for them to forget when they’re involved with their friends. Even though you might have to prepare food and snacks, try to keep your eyes on them and check how they’re doing often…it’s usually when you’re back is turned that something bad happens.

Along with keeping the children safe from dangers, you also have to remember basic home safety too. If you’re in the backyard playing, make sure the front doors are locked. By minding these babysitting safety tips, you can create a fun, safe environment for you children and neighborhood kids.

Tips for Walking Safely in the Park

April 21, 2011 – 10:02 pm

311-1215898752YxpQWalking in the park at dark is an obvious no no. However, when the weather starts improving, it’s easy to forget about this common sense advice. When it’s 70 degrees with a light breeze and the sun is shining, who can blame you for leaving work a little early and going to the park for a walk? However, there are some basic safety tips that you should abide by when going off and walking. You never really know who might be walking with you or pretending to be exercising in the park.

First, it’s best to go to the park when there’s a good crowd of people. In the mid morning and early afternoon, you’re probably not going to find many people at the park. Many people will be tied up at work, unless it’s the weekend.

If you’re determined to go during a quieter time, it’s best to have a friend or loved one accompany you. There’s always strength in numbers, so should you pass an odd person or find that someone is following you, at least you have a buddy to help you get out of the situation.

Whether you go to the park with someone or alone, it’s important to carry your cell phone on you. Keep it close to you in a handy pocket and make sure an emergency number is on speed dial. Also, ensure that the phone is charged before you head out. It’s a good idea to text or call someone to let them know where you’re going and when you’re expected to return.

Unfortunately, there are thieves and sexual predators hanging around public places, so you have to watch your back. You could potentially be the target, which is why it’s essential to follow as many safety precautions that you can when walking in the park.

4 Steps to Developing Strong Login Passwords

April 19, 2011 – 6:03 pm

1-1232472552P4L3Over the years, it’s not hard to accumulate logins and passwords for various types of accounts. From credit cards to emails, you probably have all of the above. While your login information is designed to protect your personal information, it won’t do its job if you don’t put in the effort to create a foolproof password. Below are some tips to help you generate a secure password.

  1. Forget anything that means something to you. Dates of birth, pet’s names, children’s names, etc. are out of the question. Generating a password off of information that most people know about you isn’t a good idea. This just gives people a chance to hack your accounts.
  2. Use letters and numbers as well as capitals and lowercase letters. This makes a password more challenging to figure out if hackers are abound. Feel free to be creative – for example, substitute the letter ‘e’ with the number ‘3’.
  3. Consult a random password generator. This can help give you ideas for a strong password. Or, take your current passwords and try to strengthen them by incorporating the tips above.
  4. Type your password ideas into a password strength checker. Find out how well you designed your passcode.
  5. Change your passwords at least once a year. Although it will be a pain to commit a different password to memory, it’s important to change up your habits. You don’t want someone to catch on, do you?

Pet Safety: Is Pet Insurance Worth the Cost?

April 14, 2011 – 11:16 pm

2185-1266772190CdKzInsurance isn’t easy to come by these days, because it can be so expensive. Plus, there’s not much of an incentive to buy it. Why make monthly payments on the off chance that something bad might happen when you can go to a clinic that allows sliding scale payment? However, insuring yourself and your family is the responsible thing to do, and it’s important so you can get preventative healthcare and not just treatment when something goes wrong. Pet insurance works the same way.

Your pet can’t tell you when it’s tummy feels funny or if it’s experiencing a burning sensation every time it urinates, which is why preventative care for pets is so important. Pure breds can have even more health issues, which can become costly. My friend’s bulldog had so many staph infections and eye issues, and unfortunately, I think the dog will always have health problems. Being able to make those annual veterinary appointments is beneficial, because it can save you money in the long run.

Unexpected events are not fun, but they are a learning experience. In an effort to increase awareness about these unexpected pet events, Veterinary Pet Insurance Co. (VPI) has created the Hambone Award. This is the first national award of its kind, and it’s awarded to a pet who experienced one of these unexpected events and made a full recovery as well as received reimbursements for eligible veterinary expenses.

Obviously, you need to thoroughly read the pet insurance’s policy and determine if it’s the right plan for you. Oh, and there’s that budget issue too. You want to be able to keep paying your mortgage or rent. You and kitty do need a roof over your head.

Protect Personal Data at Work

April 12, 2011 – 7:50 pm

1453-1247948268rIXBEven when you’re at work, you need to be conscious of where you put your belongings. From personal information on your computer to your wallet or purse in your desk, it’s beneficial to keep money, credit cards and other valuables safeguarded.

As soon as you arrive to the office or your desk space, you should store your wallet or purse, keys, cell phone and any other things you brought with you in a locked cabinet or drawer. This reduces the chances of anyone getting into your stuff. If you work in a large office space, you might not know everyone in the building. Or, if you see clients on a regular basis, you never know whether one of them might steal something while you’re away from your desk.

It might be strange for you to be so cautious at your work, but you never really know people unless you work close with them every day. Plus, when your workspace is accessible to the public, you need to consider the potential for theft. People just walking through can swipe something right off of your station – even work badges should be kept in a concealed place instead of right out in the open.

Along with storing your personal belongings in a locked cabinet or drawer, you should have a login and password for your computer. Any time you leave your computer, you should have it set to automatically lock – this prevents people from viewing your files and any other confidential information. Depending on what type of information you’re accessing (a patient’s or a client’s address, social security number, etc.), it’s your responsibility to keep this data private.

Now when you’re at work you might consider the opportunities for theft so rectify these weak areas to ensure that your personal security as well as others is protected.

Protecting Your Personal Information from Scams

April 7, 2011 – 12:17 pm

brick-wall-with-painted-sign-108112778351653zU7It’s so easy to fall prey to scams, because there are so many out there – you’re bound to hit a brick wall with one of them. From “organizations” asking for donations to help the needy to vehicle thefts, your name, phone number, address and other personal information can get into the hands of an evil-minded person. Recently, a BP employee’s laptop went missing, which contained numerous Gulf Coast residents’ information – this just shows that you sometimes don’t even know who you’re entrusting your information with.

Of course, everyone makes mistakes. People carrying your information don’t always intend for it to get into the wrong hands, but it can be easily stolen or accessed if it’s not protected well. Do you really think the Gulf Coast residents ever imagined their addresses and names being used against them? They were probably eager to provide BP with their information so they could gain some relief and help.  A similar scenario can happen to you.

Just think…how many times have you seen agencies requesting monetary funds to help the relief efforts in Japan? This is a hot topic and while there are valid organizations out there trying to collect money to rebuild Japan, there are just as many frauds. To protect yourself from these donation and charity scams, request that the organization send you a printed financial statement – by law, this documentation should be provided if asked.

You probably also receive emails and paper mail saying that you’ve won a sweepstakes or the lottery. Don’t let the sensationalism of the documentation cloud your better judgment. If you read the finer print, you might find that you have to pay money for a processing fee – FYI, you should never have to put out money to win money in the U.S.

It’s important to be cautious of who you give your personal information to. It’s your right to find out how your data will be protected and who will be viewing it. Get answers to these questions and research groups as much as you can before writing out money or providing your name, address, phone, etc.

Update Home Security Systems with Smarter Ones

April 5, 2011 – 4:25 pm

2185-1272685726vh1sThe signs of spring are here – warmer weather, days of rain and green blades of grass. The sense of renewal is everyone to be seen, and it might be time for you to renew your home security system too. Every year it’s wise to assess your home security system and service. Think about how helpful the services are – has it been worth your money? How has the customer service treated you? Are the monthly payments still within your budget? There is a wide range of questions to ask yourself. If you’re ready for an updated system, there is an all-in-one deal for you.

In addition to spring, April is commonly recognized as an eco-friendly month since there are so many preparations to be made for Earth Day. Home security technology has made some advancement so it’s now possible to monitor your home energy consumption via your home security system. These systems enable you to put more money in your pocket and prevent wasted water and electricity.

Also, these more advanced systems can save you gas. If you forgot to lock the door or want to know whether your child made it home safely, you can simply consult the home security application on your phone and know the answer or solve the problem. Why drive all the way home when you can control the locks, lights, cameras and alarm right from your mobile phone?

To guarantee that you really know what’s going on in your home, you can install motion sensors, which can tell you what’s happening indoors and outdoors. Has anyone driven by your house or delivered a package? Find out the answer quickly. You can also keep tabs on pets or elderly family members.

For you and your family, a new home security system can mean more convenience and freedom for your family. Now that it’s lighter later you might be forget to turn on the outdoor security lights or forget to lock the door when you’re running out for ice cream. All of this forgetfulness can put you in danger, but you can double check these things right from your mobile phone or customize the controls via your home system.

Home Safety in Baby’s Room

March 31, 2011 – 11:35 am

33-122572623351tzBringing your newborn home for the first time can be a worrisome and frightening experience. On top of trying to understand your baby’s needs and wants, you also have to be alert to any potential safety hazards. Before it’s time to bring your bundle of joy home, prepare your house for you son or daughter to prevent any accidents. Here are some tips to keep baby’s room safe.

  • Remove any pillows, blankets and toys from the crib. Between family and friends and your baby shower, you can accumulate a large number of sleeping accessories. However, at such a young age, it’s not safe for the baby to be sleeping with all of them. By keeping these items out of your crib now, you reduce the risk of accidentally leaving them in the crib where they can potentially suffocate your child.
  • Reduce the amount of loose items left on the dressers and floor. Keeping items contained is beneficial. Babies and even toddlers like to put things in their mouth – anything goes including buttons, jewelry, toilet paper, etc.
  • Trim window blind cords so there are two long strings instead of a loop. Small children can easily get wrapped up in blind cords, which can potentially strangle them. You can also purchase accessories for the wall that enable you to wrap the cord to the side of the blinds.
  • Cover all outlets with plastic outlet safety covers. This prevents your child from sticking their fingers inside and getting shocked.
  • Limit the amount of furniture in the baby’s room. When you’re carrying the baby or walking around to sooth him/her, you don’t want to risk tripping on a chair or changing table. Try to keep the space open.

There is so much planning to do before your baby comes, but the most important is safety. So ensure that the room is free from dangers, and remember to purchase essentials like a car seat so you can transport your baby safely.

Under the Hot Sun: Exposing Heat Exposure

March 29, 2011 – 11:00 pm

sol-y-nubes-25761282443000tnLMChildren as well as pets die from heat exposure every year, and every year the media attempts to raise awareness about this issues. Even on the coldest winter days, the sun’s rays can penetrate through your car’s windshield and increase the temperature inside. If you regularly leave your child, pet or elderly family member alone in the car while you’re running errands, it’s time to correct this bad habit.

Your child or pet is without a doubt at risk during the summer when the temperatures reach into the 80s. When the humidity is high, heat exposure in an automobile is even worse. It’s beneficial to start spring knowing the risks of heat exposure.

Instead of allowing your child to stay in the car, have them come with you. Yes, it will be more of an inconvience, but at least you know that they’re alive. You can better monitor them when they’re by your side. However, if you have a responsible teenager who prefers to wait in the car, leave them with the keys so the air conditioner can stay on. If you wouldn’t leave your kid in the car with the keys on, then they’re not read to sit in a car by themselves – take them with you!

For pets, it’s good to let your dog outside to enjoy the fresh air, but you can’t just leave them unattended either. If they are far from shade, they will overheat in the sun even quicker. Plus, you have to be even more careful with older dogs, because they can be even more sensitive to the heat. Pets need access to water and a comfortable shelter all day long.

These might be common sense advice, but it’s easy to forget how powerful the sun’s rays can be. Prevent heat-related deaths and don’t allow your family member, human or pet, be another statistic.
