10 Ways to Protect Your Valuables

Everyone has valuables that they want to protect. Maybe you have heirloom jewelry or expensive technology. Follow these ten easy tips to help you secure your possessions and protect them from theft.
- Keep photographs, videos and the serial numbers of valuables in a safe place. This will increase the chances of police identifying your property if it gets stolen.
- Contact the manufacturers of some of your belongings, because they might have helpful suggestions on how to keep your possessions safe.
- Engrave your driver’s license number on electronic equipment. When property is marked, it makes it harder for thieves to pawn or sell it.
- Mark your property with invisible-ink pens. All the police need is an ultraviolet light to determine who owns the possession.
- Store receipts or at least copies of them to show that you purchased these expensive products. The receipts will also come in handy for insurance purposes.
- Invest in a bolted-down safe or a heavy-duty filing cabinet. You can lock away your expensive and sentimental belongings, and if the safe or cabinet is bolted down, it will make it more difficult for the thief to get away with your things.
- Cover up expensive equipment such as Jet Skis, boats, golf clubs, etc. If you don’t have enough room in your garage, consider a storage shed that you can setup anywhere in your yard.
- Break down empty boxes for computers, plasma TVs and other expensive items that you bought before putting them at the curb. If you can keep the empty boxes in your trash can, this is even better because then you won’t be advertising what you have in your home.
- Store jewels in a safe-deposit box instead of in your home. If you prefer to have them in your home, put them in a bolted-down floor safe.
- Lock bikes and four-wheelers to a bolted-down surface.
There are even more ways to protect your possessions. For instance, you might want to invest in high tech equipment. You could easily put a computer lock on your computer to protect your personal or customer information. Also, a GPS system can help you keep track of all of your computers. If you have priceless artwork to protect, get an art-security hanger. This makes it difficult for a thief to remove the painting from the wall.
When protecting your items, you always have to think ahead and be prepared for the worst-case scenario. So start assessing your home and keep a list of all of your important belongings.
