Home security updates can be costly, but if you no longer have a security budget to draw money from, use these simple tips to boost your security.
Close Your Drapes and Blinds
Burglars on the lookout for expensive items that they can run off with, so you should keep your blinds and drapes closed when you’re not at home. This way, intruders can’t just walk up to the window and peek in to see what kind of expensive items or equipment you have in your home. Burglars are going to want to see what is of value first before going through the hassle of breaking in.
Secure Sliding Doors with a Pole
Use extra wood in your garage or shed to create a customized pole or plank to place in the track of your sliding glass doors. You can always attach a string to the plank or pole, so you can easily pull it out when necessary. Even if the burglar can unlock the sliding door, they won’t be able to get inside. Depending on your neighborhood, they most likely won’t want to shatter the glass unless they are desperate. This would be risky and create quite a bit of noise.
Train Your Dog to be a Watchdog
If you already own a dog, put him/her into doggy boot camp. Reward your dog when he/she alerts you of loud noising. Your want your dog to be protective of your home and bark when strangers outside approach the door or windows.
Setup a Neighborhood Watch
You don’t have to hold meetings or prepare extravagant meals to get neighbors involved. Simply agree to watch over each others’ homes, especially when one of you is away on vacation. As long as you update each other via the telephone, you can create a more secure neighborhood that is more aware of its surroundings.
Use Your Current Security Features
Does your fence lock? Then make sure you lock it before you leave. If you neglect locking your doors or keeping a light on outside, you’re forgetting to use the basic security features that are already included in your home. You can also turn on the television or radio when you leave to make it seem as though someone is home.
These are just a few ways that you can boost your home’s security without making a hundred or thousand dollar investment. It’s beneficial if you go through your house and determine what security features you might not be taking full advantage of.
