webcam_video_camera_238861_lWebcams might be the last home security technology you would think about installing, because the high quality ones are often more expensive. However, one man from Wellington found from experience that the cheap $20 webcams are priceless devices in the fight against home break-ins.

Jake Briggs installed a $20 webcam, which provided him with pictures, and he rigged it so it would notify him via email of any problems. Recently, his homemade security system and programming smarts were put to the test when a burglar broke into his home.

Briggs programmed the system to notify him via email of problems, and he also could access a live feed from the camera while at work. When he noticed that the person inside his home wasn’t his partner, he called the authorities.

The police showed up to Biggs’ home with dogs, and they followed the burglar’s scent to some local shops. Unfortunately, the trail ended there, but Briggs has been uploading pictures of the burglar onto his social networking sites so someone can identify the culprit.

A situation like this could happen to you, and although the burglar hasn’t been found yet, there is more of a chance since photos and recordings are available. The more information you’re able to give the police, the better chance they will have at catching the thief.

Simple and inexpensive home security devices can deter and even catch burglars in the act, so it’s beneficial to install the bare basics. Even if you can’t afford a high resolution security camera, you should still consider investing in one that will still give you home surveillance and some peace of mind.
