Common Sense Tips on Home Safety

home_homes_realty_236539_lMaking your home safer is something that you can have control over—the accidents that will happen isn’t anything you can control, but you can at least do whatever you can to prevent them. Below are some quick tips on how you can increase everyone’s safety in your house.

  • Reassess the positioning of your furniture. Is there enough of a walkway? Do you tend to bump into a particular chair or table all of the time? All you have to do is adjust the setup so everyone has enough space to get in and out of the rooms.
  • Clean up after yourself on a regular basis. Whether it’s dirty clothing, a spilled liquid, etc., it shouldn’t be on the floor.
  • Keep night lights in the hallways. If you wake up abruptly or commonly go the bathroom in the middle of the night, a little lighting can prevent falls, scrapes and bumps.
  • Leave a light on for yourself by the door. This is especially helpful if you have to look for your keys or you have steps leading into your home.
  • Adjust the main floor of your home so everything including the laundry room is conveniently on it. This might be a project you will have to do as time and funding permits, but it’s a change you should consider. Or if you’re planning on moving, give ranch style homes a chance.
  • Install grab bars in your bathroom. You might already have some type of railing or bar in your shower/tub so start using it.
  • Check that the railings going up and down your steps are stable.
  • Put your dog or cat in a crate when new people come to visit. The excitement can cause pets to jump all over people or even hide in areas where you can trip over them.

Home safety is common sense, but it’s also common for the elderly to have a serious injury simply from tripping over an area rug or falling down a set of stairs. Trying to be more conscious of these problem areas is beneficial, and even if you’re not elderly, it’s important to remember that accidents can happen to anyone, regardless of age.
