Decoys for Burglars
August 6, 2009 – 10:22 pm
Some burglars use decoys such as children or the elderly to get into your house, so why not come up with your own decoys to deter burglars? Remember that scene in “Home Alone” when Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) creates a party scene in his home to make it look like he wasn’t alone? If you want to protect your home from robbers, you need to make your home look like too much of a challenge and risk.
One way to do this is to have a security alarm setup. Security companies such as Vector have stickers you can put on all of your windows as well as signs for your yard. When a robber is casing your house and sees that you most likely have a security system, it’s going to make them rethink their decision to break in.
A watchdog is another deterrent. Dogs have sensitive hearing and will most likely bark when people walk into your yard or up and down the street. If you teach your dog to alert you, this might be enough to scare the robber away. It’s also beneficial to walk your dog and have your dog be noticed in the neighborhood.
Another route you can take is installing an outdoor dummy camera. Some models have a blinking LED light, so it looks more realistic. This would be a cheaper than buying real security cameras and the software or computer necessary to use them. If you decide to purchase a fake camera, make sure that it’s weather resistant.
Motion sensor security lights for your front and back door can help bring suspicious characters into plain view for you and your neighbors. If you’re planning to be away from your home, set timers on different lights in your home so it appears like your home as usual. Or keep your television or radio on so that it sounds as though someone is home.
Some of these decoy ideas might seem like a waste of time like the dummy camera, but it’s the little things that add up and can keep your home more secure, and potential robbers might consider your home less of a target if you haveĀ substantial outdoor lighting or an alert watchdog. Burglars often want to take the path of least resistance, because they don’t want to get caught so it’s important to make your home like more of a trap than a target.
