Have Squatters Entered Your Neighborhood?

May 30, 2009 – 5:45 pm

foreclosure-signWith all the foreclosures the last year has brought (with more on the way), more and more homes are standing unoccupied, even in well-to-do neighborhoods. This can be an invitation to squatters who come in for the “free rent.” They’re often able to pirate electricity and cable from neighbors, making their stolen domicile quite comfortable.

Unfortunately, squatters lead to problems. While some are just looking for a place to stay, others are involved in drugs and other criminal activities. If there are unoccupied homes in your neighborhood, it pays to be especially vigilant. Don’t let squatters take up residence as it can increase crime on your street, and may make your home and your family more susceptible to break-ins and other safety issues.

Signs that squatters have moved in

You may be wondering to yourself if squatters have moved into that foreclosed home down the street or if its been sold to new homeowners. Here are some possible signs of squatters:

  • Cables run across the lawn to generators or other houses where they may be stealing electricity and other utilities
  • Little or no furniture
  • Sheets hung over the windows to keep people from seeing in
  • Other suspicious activity

What to do if you suspect squatters

This may sound obvious, but don’t confront squatters yourself. While most folks are probably harmless and just looking for a place to stay, you really have no idea what these people will be into. If they’re involved with drugs or other criminal activity it could be very dangerous for you to interact with them.

Your best bet is to simply call the police who will come and check things out.

To help prevent squatters in the first place, it pays to maintain an organized and active neighborhood watch.
