Household Fire Safety Tips from Queensland Fire & Rescue
April 29, 2010 – 11:30 pm
In an effort to raise awareness about fire safety, the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service has been providing informative programs as well as safety inspection to residents for free. The purpose is to reduce the chance of house fires and educate individuals on how to prevent and extinguish a fire. As a part of their mission, the service has been handing out free fire blankets.
Fire blankets are a vital part of household fire safety. When you realize a house fire is occurring, a fire blanket should be the first thing you throw at it to help contain the fire. These blankets are particularly effective on kitchen fires involving pots and pans. A fire blanket can also be used to protect yourself and family members when trying to escape your home without getting burned.
In addition to the fire blanket there are other ways to protect your home from fire as well as your family members. For example, fire safety education among your family is beneficial. If you have children, they should know how to dial for help, and they should also know not to be afraid of firefighters when they’re in their gear. Also, going over the all familiar Stop, Drop and Roll technique is always a good reminder.
If you’re interested in getting your home ready for a potential fire, contact your local fire department and see what information or programs they’re providing. While it’s good practice to check your own smoke alarms and identify exits, it can be beneficial for a firefighter to come into your home and address any weakness that you might not have identified yet.
