How to Prevent Candle Fires

Candles are a convenient way to create a peaceful ambiance as well as an aromatic environment. Candles might be a part of your every day lifestyle, or you might frequently use them during the holiday seasons. If you have candles burning often, it’s important to know how to use them safely to prevent a candle fire.
- Never leave your lit candles unattended. Even if you’re just going to run to the store for a quick trip, you should blow them out. You never know if your pets might get into them, and it’s also possible for the heat to cause the glass container to break.
- Place your lit candles at least a foot or two from combustible items such as curtains, blinds, mattresses, clothes, towels, plants, etc. The flame could rise up or be blown into the things hanging above it and cause a fire.
- Never put the candles within reach of children or pets. The flickering light could entice them, and you don’t want them to get harmed or have an accident.
- Purchase candles that have sturdy holders. Sometimes cheaper candles are encased in a thin glass, which can easily break under high temperatures. Look for thicker glass containers and jars.
- Always trim the wick before lighting your candle. If you light a wick that is hanging over the candle, the candle will burn in unexpected places, which can cause the hot wax to melt where you don’t want it.
There are safer alternatives to candles such as tabletop air fresheners and spray fabric and air refreshers. You might want to use these options if you’re unable to keep tabs on the candle. Or you can try a candle warmer, which plugs into the wall and warms the candle from the bottom and releases the scent that way. It’s similar to a coffee cup warmer. Although there isn’t a flame, you still should unplug the candle warmer before you leave.
Another product that is effective at producing an aromatic environment is an effusion lamp. However, it’s important to read the directions, because these can be dangerous if not used properly. If you decide to use one of these, it’s imperative that you store the flammable scented oil in a cool, dry place that will not be disturbed. Also, when operating your effusion lamp, remember to blow out the flame. Otherwise, your effusion lamp will break and release the flammable oil.
Creating a relaxing home environment with candles and other fragrance accessories is worthwhile, but it’s essential to follow these basic safety tips and teach your family to do the same.
