Improving Security While on the Road
May 26, 2009 – 7:23 pmWe usually talk about home security here, as in things you can do to make your house or apartment more secure, but for folks who travel a lot, “home” is sometimes a hotel room or perhaps an RV.
There are quite a few little gadgets and pieces of equipment you can get to improve your security in places like this as well. Many are small and easily portable so you can take them when you travel. Let’s take a look at a few.
Door Stop Alarm
This is just what it sounds like. A portable device that can be stuck under a hotel/dorm/apartment door to make a noise when pressure is applied and act as a door jamb to prevent anyone from entering.
The GE 50246 SmartHome Door Stop Alarm is about $12 at Amazon.
Door Security Bar
If you’re afraid that door stop wouldn’t keep someone really determined from breaking down your door, then a security bar can be the next step up.
These typically expandable bars are braced between the knob and the floor at an angle that would make it tough to kick open the door from the other side. Some of them have multiple purposes and may work with sliding glass doors too.
While something like this won’t fit as neatly in your luggage, it’s certainly small enough to keep in the car.
This Dual-Function Security Bar is less than $25.
Personal Security Handheld Alarm
This type of advice can be hooked to a keychain and easily carried in hand when you’re on the way to your car in a dark parking lot or perhaps walking the dog in the evening. Simply press the button to make a screeching alarm sound that will draw attention to you (the last thing a would-be mugger wants).
There are numerous models to choose from, such as the InGrid RKR801IG Keychain Remote. Again prices are quite affordable across the spectrum.
