swimming_pool_breathetake_267303_lA backyard swimming pool can be a luxurious and inexpensive way to spend the summertime since you don’t have to leave your home to get some rest and relaxation. Plus, you can invite friends and family over for barbeques and pool party fun. While pools and hot tubs can improve your home and increase its value, there are hazards associated with them. So you have to be prepared to safeguard your children, grandchildren and even neighborhood kids.

One way to ensure that no one drowns or gets injured in your pool is to be present supervising or at least have a trustworthy adult watching over the swimmers at all times. You can make sure the children are swimming safely and are avoiding dangerous activities such as diving in the shallow end, playing rough with others and running around. It’s also wise to create a list of pool rules and have them clearly marked. Whenever someone new comes to swim, you can go over the rules before allowing them to join in the fun.

Since you can’t always be monitoring your pool, there are special motion-detecting devices that hang on the pool. When these devices sense that someone has entered the pool, a loud alarm will sound. This will alert you as well as the neighbors that someone has entered the pool without permission. Even having a home surveillance camera recording the pool while you’re at work can help prevent drownings.

Other simple safety solutions include keeping a cover secured on the pool when its not in use and keeping the gate to the pool shut and locked. You can also post up signs to deter neighbor kids from getting into the pool when you’re not around. In addition, providing flotation devices and swimming lessons is good practice.

So many children die of drownings that could be preventable, so it’s important to do the best you can to ensure a safe pool experience for everyone this summer.
