baltimore_park_play_26881_lDid you know that next week is National Playground Safety Week from April 26-30? In honor of this safety awareness week, it’s important to assess your background playground to ensure that it’s up to par for your child or children.

Even though you have a playground in your backyard where you can watch your children playing, it doesn’t mean that they are exempt from danger. Accidents can happen at a public playground as well as a home playground set, so it’s beneficial to safeguard your play area and reduce the risk of injury.

Some playgrounds are made with hard materials such as cement and wood, which won’t be forgiving if your child falls on them. Some alternatives include mulch, sand, rubber mulch, or rubber mats. If you already have pavement or rocks, you can at least lay down some rubber mats in areas that your child might fall. Another way to prevent falls and injury is to inspect the construction of the play set to ensure that the steps, stairs and ladders are durable. You might even consider adding a guardrail or wall to prevent your child from falling off.

Hanging ropes and string can also cause a danger, because your child’s head or other body part could become entangled, which would cause injury or even death. It’s wise to eliminate these aspects of your playground and replace them with something safer. Or, at the very least, secure the loose ends so they can’t catch onto things.

If you’re in the process of building a background playground, you have the freedom to design it with safety in mind. You will definitely want the playground to be in plain view so you can visibly see the children while you’re inside. However, in the same respect, you don’t want your children to be able to see the road or driveway, because they could run off and get into trouble or a stranger from the road could see them too. For these reasons, this is why the playground should be strategically arranged in your yard.

In addition to following these safety precautions, it also helps to keep the equipment safe and age-appropriate. The purpose of a play set is to provide a fun area where your children can have fun and get in some exercise. The last thing you want to have happen is an injury. So keep these playground safety tips in mind.
