Tips for Surviving a Major Snow Storm
December 17, 2009 – 11:00 pm
Being snowed in for the day is a miracle for some, especially those in school, but severe winter storms can be the scariest events to experience when you’re not prepared. Instead of waiting for the winter blizzard of the year to hit, take some basic safety precautions so you’re somewhat prepared for the event.
- A fireplace can be convenient, because if the storm brings freezing rain, chances are your power lines might not be able to handle the weight of it all. Surviving without electricity is difficult, but you can at least keep warm and cook some food with your fireplace so you should always keep a supply of wood nearby your house.
- Stocking your pantry with nonperishable foods is a wise idea, because if the snow drifts up to your front door, the storm might prevent you from being able to leave your house for a day or more.
- Shoveling or snow blowing your driveway and walkways is important if you’re able to do it and the storm isn’t so severe yet. What if you have to pick up your child in a few hours or what if the ambulance needs to get to your house? At some point the snow will probably start falling faster than you can manage it, but if you try to keep on top of it in the beginning, you will at least be able to leave your house at least once if necessary.
- Store candles, flashlights, radios and a first aid kit where it can be easily reached. It’s also beneficial to have a separate stash of batteries around. Or you can invest in a crank powered flashlight and radio, but by the end of the night, you’re hands might get pretty tired.
- Keep your trees properly trimmed, so there is less of a risk for the frozen branches to fall on your car or house. The weight of snow and ice can rip branches right off of the trunk.
- Watch what’s going on outside, because you might see potential hazards and be able to prevent an accident before it happens. If it becomes windy, you should go outside and gather any items that will blow away such as outdoor table and chairs.
Winter storms can bring on a variety of dangerous elements such as wind, freezing rain, hail and snow, so it’s important for you to prepare for the worst as much as you can.
