84993_mmmm_peanut_butterRemember those packaged peanut butter crackers that started the salmonella scare in 2009? That simple food contamination ended up affecting other products containing peanut butter. Even pet foods were added to the list. When certain foods have been recalled, it’s best to eliminate the contaminated food from your diet.

One national food contamination has occurred yearly since 2006. This has definitely caused thousands of products and natural resources to be thrown away. It’s such a wasteful process that would not occur if proper hygiene and monitoring would take place in manufacturing companies such as the Peanut Corporation of America in Georgia. The Associated Press reported 1,313 products recalled. Over the course of the salmonella-infected peanut butter crisis, 575 people became ill and eight people died. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) urged people to throw away products made from 2009 as a safety precaution.

Even when it comes to your pet, you might want to investigate their food and treat labels. Eight pet food brands that contained peanut in some form had been recalled, which included Carolina Prime, Carolina Prime Pet, Grreat Choice, Happy Tails, Healthy Hide, Healthy Hide Deli-Wrap, Salix and Shoppers Valu. For the health of you and your pet, it’s important to inspect all food labels and be on the watch for whatever ingredient that has been recalled.

During a food recall, it helps to spread the word to prevent more people and animals from becoming ill or dying. Also, if retailers still have a product on their shelf that has been recalled, speak to the highest personnel you can find on the totem pole.

Food recalls are frightening, and they make you realize how vulnerable we are. So in these situations, spread awareness and visit the FDA’s website often for updates. Lastly, if you have recalled food, put it in your compost bin instead of throwing it away. Composting has been known to kill several types of salmonella.
