Dogs and Homeowners Insurance

If your dog chomps on the UPS guy, and it happens on your property, you're probably thinking you'll be covered by your homeowner's insurance. Maybe, maybe not. If your dog goes crazy during a thunderstorm while you're not home and does some major damage to your house, you may be hoping your insurance company will cover the expense of repairs? But will they? Again, maybe, maybe not.

Many insurers won't cover damage caused by dogs the company considers "risky." Examples include Rottweilers, Pit Bulls, and Chow-Chows.

So, how do you make sure you're covered? Talk to your insurance agent about an umbrella policy that covers liability for your car and house. A $2 million umbrella covers liability amounts far exceeding what your homeowner's insurance is designed to cover. It will usually cost you an additional $200 to $400 a year for this kind of coverage, but at least you'll know you're protected if Fido takes a nip out of the mailman.
