About Keypad Door Locks

Keypad door locks, previously seen in large commercial settings, are becoming popular for residential use. They replace key-based door lock systems (what most of us have) with keypads where you punch in a number combination (much like using an ATM machine) in order to unlock your door. They are especially good if you worry about losing your key. Keypad door locks obviate the need for leaving keys stashed around the outside of the house (a very bad idea since burglars know all about these kind of hiding places) for emergencies.

Keypad door locks are fairly easy to install as far as DIY home improvement projects go. They start at about $150 and you usually get to choose and program in your own code (you can usually choose how long you want it to be also, i.e. 4-8 digits). It is also possible to change the entry codes incase someone you gave the code to moves out, or you just don't want them to have access to your home  any more (changing the code must be done from inside the building) for obvious security reasons).

Other options for non-key-using door locks, if you don't want to have to remember a code, are fingerprint door locks.
